On The Boards - White Stone, Virginia
Perched above the picturesque Rappahannock River, this 7,000-square-foot residence redefines scale through masterful design. Though substantial in size, the home is intentionally broken down into approachable, human-scaled volumes, using dramatic cantilevers, varied materials, and horizontal layering to create a sense of architectural lightness.
The great room soars nearly 18 feet in height, designed to graciously accommodate a family of seven and their guests. It anchors the home's second floor, flanked by public spaces—kitchen, dining, and a column-free outdoor porch to the right—and a private bedroom suite to the left. Expanses of glass usher in both front and backlight, giving the home a luminous, airy quality. The roof appears to float above the structure, heightening the sense of openness and connection to the surrounding landscape.
From the cantilevered outdoor deck, which seamlessly extends from the kitchen, views of the Rappahannock River Bridge and the pool below are uninterrupted. The deck is a structural feat—bold, elegant, and completely column-free.
Below, the first floor is devoted to children’s bedrooms and play areas, tucked beneath the public spaces above for a layered experience of privacy and communal living. A dramatic entry corridor organizes the home’s circulation, marked by a striking pivot door measuring approximately six feet wide and ten feet tall. Inside, a pristine white terrazzo floor ties each space together, offering both elegance and cohesion.
The courtyard experience is equally intentional. Concrete privacy walls define an inner sanctuary of green lawn, hardscape, and pool, leading to a sculptural pool house with a canopy above—framing relaxation, recreation, and retreat.
As with many of the firm’s projects, materiality plays a key role. Each floor features different exterior finishes, adding texture and rhythm to the form. The house doesn’t just sit on the land—it interacts with it. Cantilevers shade the interiors from harsh sun, while large expanses of glass draw the outdoors in, making light and view constant companions in daily life.
This home is a balance of scale, sanctuary, and spectacle—a bespoke environment where structure and setting come into seamless harmony.
