On The Boards - Maryland

This distinctive 1,200-square-foot cottage in Maryland is a bold architectural statement, raised high on pilings to adapt to poor soil conditions and wet terrain—while offering stunning, elevated views of the surrounding water. Though modest in footprint, the three-story home is rich in design and spatial drama.

At the heart of this design is a highly unusual skewed A-frame. Unlike traditional forms, the ridge beam runs diagonally from corner to corner, giving the structure a sculptural quality that elevates it from a simple home to a work of art. Soaring glass panels stretch uninterrupted from the first floor to the very peak of the roof, creating a breathtaking vertical view corridor that immerses the interior in natural light and panoramic bay scenery.

The layout is efficient and layered. The main floor hosts the kitchen, living and dining areas, and a guest bedroom. The second floor is dedicated to the primary suite, offering private luxury and more elevated views. At the top, a loft office provides a serene, light-filled workspace with commanding views from above.

The rear of the cottage is intentionally private, with minimal openings to ensure seclusion and to enhance the sense of the home as a freestanding sculptural object in the landscape. A spacious deck wraps around two sides of the building, extending the living space outdoors and inviting the breeze and views in.

Inside, exposed wooden beams and wood ceiling decking add texture, warmth, and an organic rhythm to the modern geometry of the space. Every angle, material, and opening has been curated to balance visual drama with serene simplicity.

This cottage is more than a residence—it’s a refined, expressive retreat that celebrates its setting, turning compact square footage into a cathedral-like experience of light, space, and design.
