On The Boards - Northumberland

Designed as a second home for a couple, this three-bedroom retreat offers a perfect balance of functionality and elegance. The home is carefully crafted with spacious living areas—great room, living room, dining room, and bedrooms—while maintaining privacy and flow. The design includes an ingeniously disguised garage, ensuring that visitors are greeted with a sleek, uninterrupted facade upon arrival.

The front entry features a lovely roof canopy, offering shelter as guests approach the door. Upon entering, a direct line of sight draws the eye through the home to the breathtaking water views beyond. To the left, the kitchen and dining spaces flow naturally into the grand great room, anchored by an oversized fireplace, a key feature chosen by the owners to create warmth and character. Further left, a screened porch offers an additional space for enjoying the surrounding environment.

The exterior combines Nishiha siding with a standing seam roof, resulting in a refined and modern aesthetic. The architectural form is dynamic, with carefully stacked "boxes" that push and pull against each other to create a sense of airiness and lightness. This design technique reduces the overall mass, breaking down the structure into smaller, more intimate elements.

On the water side, expansive glass windows offer unobstructed views of the pool and water beyond, while allowing for natural ventilation throughout the home. The strategic use of corner windows enhances the sense of openness, making each space feel larger and more connected to the outdoors.

This home is an example of how thoughtful design can blend comfort with beauty, creating a space that feels both expansive and welcoming, perfectly suited for a relaxed, riverside lifestyle.
